UFC champs Georges St-Pierre, Frankie Edgar fall short at 2010 ESPY Awards

Well, there’s always next year.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and
lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar each fell
short in their bids to win a 2010 ESPY Award at ESPN’s annual awards
ceremony.

St-Pierre was nominated in the “Best Fighter” category, while Edgar’s
UFC 112 win over former champion B.J. Penn was up for an award as the
year’s “Best Upset.” The results of the awards were announced on
Wednesday night during a live ESPN broadcast.

Bob Sapp pulled off July 18’s Impact FC event, threatens legal action

It looks like Australia isn’t on “Sapp time.”

Gargantuan heavyweight and entertainment personality Bob Sapp today told
MMAjunkie.com that he has been pulled from a fight
with Soa Palelei at “Impact FC 2: The Uprising – Sydney.”

Sapp, who is currently in Bulgaria after recently completing work on a
remake of “Conan the Barbarian,” said he received an email today from
the Australian MMA startup informing him that the promotion would not
fly him to Sydney for the July 18 fight because the plane ticket is too
expensive.

UFC announcer Bruce Buffer cashes in 2010 World Series of Poker main event

After UFC welterweight Mike Swick cashed in one of the series’ earlier events, another member of the UFC family earned a payout in the 2010 World Series of Poker – this time in the main event.

Ring announcer Bruce Buffer, who also moonlights as a part-time pro poker player and host of the Luxor Las Vegas poker room, finished 478th out of 7,319 entrants.

He earned a $27,519 payout for the finish. First place is worth $8.94 million.

With Strikeforce title on line, Tim Kennedy says "Jacare" is just his next biggest fight

Strikeforce middleweight contender Tim Kennedy has
long been considered one of the top prospects in the 185-pound division,
but now may finally be his chance to trade in that up-and-comer tag for
a different one: champion.

Kennedy gets that chance on Aug. 21 in the co-feature of the
Showtime-broadcast “Strikeforce: Houston” event when he battles Ronaldo
“Jacare” Souza for Strikeforce’s vacant middleweight
title.

On Tuesday, Kennedy took part in a pre-fight press conference promoting
the event, and the former Army sniper said “Jacare” is just the next
name on his list.

UFC 116 officially draws 12,740 attendees for $4.05 million live gate

July’s “UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin” event at the MGM Grand Garden
Arena in Las Vegas officially drew 12,740 spectators for a $4,053,990
live gate.

Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer today
emailed the official figures to MMAjunkie.com.

Of the 12,740 fans in the arena, 9,218 purchased tickets and 3,522 were
issued complimentary admission. Additionally, 2,194 tickets went unsold.

Goodman welcomes "great opportunity" against Bellator champ Lombard

While outclassed on paper, former NFL running back Herbert “Whisper”
Goodman says he can’t wait to make his Bellator
debut against middleweight champ Hector Lombard.

In a bout first reported by MMAjunkie.com, Lombard and Goodman clash in a non-title bout at Bellator 24.

Bellator officials today announced the contest.

UFC vet Shonie Carter vs. Torrance Taylor targeted for Bellator 25

After an 11-year career that’s taken him around the world and earned him the nickname “Mr. International,” Shonie Carter is now poised for his first-ever Bellator Fighting Championships fight.

Sources close to the negotiations today told MMAjunkie.com that Carter is expected to meet one-time Strikeforce fighter Torrance Taylor next month at Bellator 25.

However, bout agreements haven’t been signed, and commission officials must approve the fight.

Bellator gives free licensing rights to American Forces Network

Bellator Fighting Championships is giving away its season-two and season-three content for free to the American Forces Network.

The deal adds another 1 million viewers to Bellator’s collection of broadcasters partners, which includes FOX Sports Net, NBC, Telemundo and mun2.

As part of the deal, Bellator’s season-two events air weekly in Monday-night time slots from Sept. 6 to Nov. 22, and its season-three shows air Nov. 29 to Feb. 14.

UFC 116 drug tests come back clean

All 15 fighters who underwent drug testing at this month’s UFC 116 event tested clean for performance-enhancing drugs and recreational/drugs of abuse.

Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer today e-mailed the drug-testing results to MMAjunkie.com.

UFC 116 took place July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar topped interim title-holder Shane Carwin in the main event.
